Ravensworth 'The Long way around' Bianco 2020

'Trebbiano from Swan Valley, gewurz and riesling from Great Southern. Bryan Martin of Ravensworth needed hand with no fruit in smoke-filled 2020 over east, so headed west for his assistance. Some skin fermentation in the mix.

Golden happy orange colour. Scents of mandarin, ginger, water crackers and cashew. The palate is similar with a fine web of powdery tannin and the grip at the finish is epic. I really like this. That ginger-lemon tea thing in the finish is a clincher. Nailed the style, delivering complexity, pitch-perfect textural experience and a general sense of drinkability. Yes thank.'

'From over 5000km they came - across both the Nullabor and Bass Strait - five trucks, one train and a boat carrying eight varieties, from five regions to finally reach home, Murrumbateman. You might say the long way around.

We knew early our fruit was toast from bushfires. Many friends from far away offered us fruit and processing space so we scratched together an eclectic mix of esoterica.

We made no wine from our NSW vineyards due to extreme smoke taint concentrations from the bushfires that ravaged our region from December to late January 2020. With this on our minds we headed west, as far as we could go to look for fruit and winemaking space. Luckily lots of industry colleagues stepped up to help and we found ourselves with options from Swan valley, Margaret and Frankland rivers and the deep south vineyards of Porongurup.

This is one of a pair of multi-region blends based on the fruit from this wonderful old vineyard in the Swan valley near Perth. Dry grown, bush vines, quite hot area very reminiscent of Spain and Portugal.

Our Long Way Around Bianco is mostly Trebbiano, one of Italy’s most versatile and widely planted varieties that goes by many synonyms right across Europe. A short time on skins and then barrel fermented. This was blended with Gewurztraminer from Frankland and Riesling from Porongurup, respectively adding exotic aromas and acidity.'
