Konpira Maru Gravy Semi-Sweet Red 2018
'Definitely the most challenging wine of 2018 and a real statement for us. After the storms, a brutally hot finish to summer and our lower than average production in Queensland we were open to just about anything. Enter Cabernet. Very unique Cabernet, Cabernet so ripe it was more like sultanas. After a short lived tantrum, our thoughts turned to the the major issue of supermarkets rejecting perfectly good products because they are mis-shaped or the like. Yes this was an extreme example and anyone in their right mind would have rejected it, but we thought fuck it let’s give it a go, a decision made after several goldys it must be said. This wine will change yearly but $5 from each bottle sold will be donated to a charity doing great things that mean something to us. This year the fruit was kindly donated by Clovely Estate.
Clovely Estates Steinhardts Road Vineyard, Moffatdale, South Burnett, QLD.
92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Nebbiolo, 2.5% Semillon. Essentially a port style made naturally with no fortification. 2 tonne of CAbernet was basket pressed, yielding just 400L of juice. This juice was then added to Nebbiolo skins for ferment. BAsket pressed again once ferment was complete, two weeks late. A splash of semillon was added for freshness, the wine was then left in stainless steel tank, racked 3 times and hand bottled unfined, unfiltered with no additions. 15.7%. 762 bottles.
Semi-sweet red wine, quite an obscure style somewhat comparable to an Italian-Chinotto-Ruby-Port hybrid. Some volatility on the grapey nose, so give it a good swirl. Plenty of spice, dried herbs and savoury notes. The palate, although sweet, retains freshness. Serve chilled for a great summer dessert wine, perfectly paired with a cheese platter or drink over ice, Vermouth style, with some orange peel.'
