Little Reddie 100% Malmsbury Pinot Noir 2019
The Malmsbury Pinot comes from a little under two acres of MV6, D5V12 and Mariafeld clones planted on their own roots (however the tiny amount of Mariafeld in the 2019 season was picked early for a sparking, so just the former two clones for this vintage). Soils are basalt with rusted basalt and quartz. The vineyard is dry-grown and sits at 450-500m ASL on a gentle northeast-facing slope (the Pinot is planted at the top of the slope). We had a slightly earlier pick than previously, coming to learn that phenolic ripeness can occur at lower sugars from these very happy and balanced vines.
The pick was fermented in a single large old oak vat, 100% whole bunch as always. Slightly longer maceration than in other years here (12 days in all, beginning with nine days without any touching then three days of gentle foot crushing). This was pressed to stainless for a couple of weeks, stirred occasionally to allow for dryness before barreling (there was a little acetic edge that cleaned up during this time too). Elevage with fine lees was in a lovely selection of older barriques and hogsheads (between three and 16 years old). Very regular topping for 10 months, then racked and settled in January and bottled February 12th 2020. 40ppm sulphur total.
