Luis Seabra Vinhos, Lda. Vinhos Xisto Cru Branco 2018
Rabigato 70%, Códega 10%, Gouveio 10%, Viosinho e Donzelinho Branco 10%, with vine age of more than 80 years old, planted on mica schist from 2 vineyards in Meda at an altitude: 650 a 700 m. Rather than single vineyard, this is a single soil field blend, from plots planted in the southern Douro from 1920-1933. It is intended as a clear expression of terroir and place. Sustainably farmed vines, and vinified using only spontaneous fermentation and indigenous yeasts. This way, Luis removes all potential variability other than the soil type as an expression of terroir. Before pressing the grapes were crushed and de-stemmed, no prior maceration was done, the wine was decanted at low temperature for 24 hours, indigenous yeast fermentation and ageing took place in used French oak barrels of 228 litres. The alcoholic fermentation lasted for 45 to 120 days and malolactic fermentation was not done. The total ageing was 12 months in barrel with the presence of the fermentation lees without steering them and more 6 months in stainless steel prior to bottling.
