Luis Seabra Vinhos, Lda. Xisto Ilimitado Branco 2018
The 2018 is a blend of Rabigato 60%, Viosinho 20% Gouveio 15% Códega 5 % Coming from several plots of small 35-60 year old vines on mica schist soils at 500-600m in Meda, the Douro Superior. Cima Corgo subregion, is noted for extreme highs and lows in temperature. These stressed vines produce low yields, and grapes that produce insanely wild aromatics and with brilliant acidity. All the fermentation is natural, Luis achieves purity, his wines are exactly what the vineyards give him. Minerality drives this white, wet flinty stones mix with fresh nectarine, white peach, and bartlett pear on the nose. A bright lifted palate follows, packed full of fresh picked orchard fruits and more stony minerals. Xisto Ilimitado Branco is graceful and powerful all at once, without ever coming across as heavy. Long and seamless across the tongue, and laced with mouth-watering wet stone that sucks you back in for more. In the Douro region where there are numerous varieties planted in different types of terraces, slopes or flat areas, schist is the common denominator, vineyards based on schist slopes that have no end. This is the starting point for the Xisto Ilimitado, a search that tries to express the different wine-growing areas which have their own character, regardless of the varieties to which it refers. Different plots of vineyards that have similar characteristics from Meda area in Douro Suprerior where mica schist soils are predominant.
