Nicolas Joly Les Vieux Clos 2016 - AOC Savennieres
'Nicolas Joly is renowned for prestigious wines and being a leading light of biodynamic viticulture. The wines are widely touted as some of France’s best wines, as we know, and of course they’re made from chenin blanc. Les Vieux Clos is what you’d maybe call the entry level wine. All the vines are on schist soils. Interesting is the shift away from the tense, tight and racy wines of the past to more rich and intense styles with higher alcohol and weight a feature.
This is rich but fresh chenin blanc, redolent of green pear, mixed citrus peel, wet ferns and white pepper. Lush in the palate, a slippery mass that slips over the tongue and stains the palate with a slick of chenin grapey-ness. Ostentatious white wine of density and yet lovely, supple flow. Quite the feast.'

'Nicolas Joly is widely (well, universally) recognized as the "Godfather" of biodynamic wine. Such is his obsession with the methodology and his energy in promoting its use in vineyards the world over. He also happens to own outright one of the greatest vineyard sites in the Loire Valley, the Coulée de Serrant. Its reputation is ensconced in its distinction as a separately designated AOC unto itself. Joly also makes two other wines from impeccable sites in Savennières. Les Vieux Clos is his youngest site, five hectares planted to sélection massale in 1990. The slopes face east at a very steep grade in some spots, and the soil is a mix of predominantly schist interspersed with quartz and sand. The harvest is typically cropped at 30-35 hl/ha (well below the legal limit), and the wine is done in a combination of wood and tank. Where the Coulée de Serrant and the Rôches Aux Moines take years to reach their full development, Les Vieux Clos is a more accessible wine and a sterling introduction to the man who birthed a movement.'
