Georges Deschamps Chablis 1er Côtes de Fontenay VV (Amphora) 2022

$124.00

Here we see where the Domaine has a play with technique, here utilising amphorae. For a region and history so focused on the site and the fruit, this decision in the winemaking lends a vibrant and unique texture, imparting a cooling and clear quality that lingers on the palate and separates this wine from the pack. The less oxidative and more circular quality of amphorae means that certain things are dialled up, and others dialled down, really interesting to see which layers sing and which hold it together. Mostly, we are captivated with its superb acidity and intriguing complexity. A hint of reduction and a touch of wet wool funk add layers of interest to the nose, leading into a palate that is harmonious and beautifully shaped. To have clarity and richness, reminiscent of aged Premier and Grand Cru wines, is such an exciting thing in a young wine. Reminded of Chablis from decades past. It's a testament to the winemaker's skill that these characteristics emerge without extended bottle ageing, while maintaining remarkable freshness.

Georges Deschamps is the great-grandfather of Guillaume Vrignaud from the well-established Domaine Vrignaud. The family began planting in the appellation 1er cru Fourchaume with the Côte de Fontenay climate in 1955. In 1975, they planted the rest of their vines around Fontenay near Chablis. It is a quality-conscious family with an absolute belief in the importance of work in the vines, respect for nature and biodiversity. 2009 marks the start of organic certification by Ecocert. According to the family, organic farming is a way of thinking, a way of revealing the terroir. In 2012, all wines were certified organic and have been so ever since.
