Michael Hall Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2025
Probably the best Australian Sauvignon Blanc we’ve tried this year.
There’s plenty of fruit here, with citrus and more restrained green and herbal notes, but none of the aggressive pungency that can sometimes dominate Sauvignon Blanc. What really surprised us was the blackcurrant character, easily the most expressive blackcurrant note we’ve come across in an Australian Sauvignon, giving the wine another layer of flavour and interest.
Fresh acidity keeps everything bright, while the oak sits beautifully in the background, adding texture without taking over. It’s unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc, but with enough depth and balance to make this just as appealing to people who normally tell us they don’t like Sauvignon Blanc.
A seriously impressive wine.
'Our tiny Sauvignon block at Edwards Hill in Lenswood seems made to test all but the most footsure of viticulturists! Its steep north-easterly pitch has turned an ankle or two and inspired some colourful new vocabulary. But at 550m elevation it’s a rare gem, producing a few crates of intensely perfumed fruit.
For wine nerds like me: “Fumé blanc”: barrel-fermented and age-worthy. Low winter rains were followed by a warm and dry growing season, echoing the 2019 vintage and prompting an early harvest. Handpicked on the 1st of March, fermented in French oak puncheons and matured on lees for eight months. Filtered and bottled.
1250 bottles produced.'
