Nicolas Joly Family - Les Vieux Clos 2024 - AOC Savennières
Nicolas Joly - Les Vieux Clos 2024 - AOC Savennières (Savennières,Loire Valley)
Terroir: From a 5.5 hectares vineyard planted on light slopes facing east in the mountainous AOP Savennières appellation. Yields are kept at 25 hectoliters per hectare (well below the 50 hl/ha requirement of the appellation). The soil here is unique, with sand layered in the first 2 feet.
Winemaking Notes: Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at ambient temperature, with some parcels fermented in tank - a unique trait for this wine from this estate. The wine goes through full malolactic fermentation naturally, followed by a period of maturation over 8 months in used oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered before bottling. Les Vieux Clos presents as the most aromatic of the Joly wines, exuding notes of fresh ginger, coriander seed, lemon peel, beeswax, and wet stone salinity. While this wine is amazing enjoyed young for its fresh aromas, it promises to deliver in spades with some age.
Alcohol: 13.5%
The wines are made according to biodynamic practices (since 1980) by the world’s foremost thinker, philosopher and practitioner of biodynamic wine farming, Nicolas Joly. The reputation of the estate, the man and the wines is unquestionable and needs little introduction. These are perhaps the world’s most important wines philosophically when it comes to understanding biodynamic practices, and they are surely the most singular Chenin Blancs on the planet. Considering the significance and longevity of these wines, we think the pricing is nothing short of extraordinary.
